What is Abscess?

Abscess is a pocket of puss that develops in any part of the body. Abscess develops within the tissues and organs of the body. Puss is a thick fluid with the cells, dead tissues and bacteria. it is generally yellow or green in colour. Abscess is caused due to infection with bacteria, viruses and parasites. The area infected with abscess becomes red, has swelling and painful. There are two types of abscesses, they are

  • Skin abscesses
  • Internal abscesses

Skin abscesses are abscess that are formed just below the skin. Skin abscess looks like a pimple or wound on the skin, we can touch it. It is easily detected as we can see and touch the abscess. The infected area/skin becomes red, swollen and painful, this abscess can be seen on underarms, hands, trunk etc,
Internal abscesses develop inside the body, in the organ or spaces between organs. These abscess may not be seen but have symptoms like pain in the infected area and high fever, they can damage infected organ. it can effect organs like liver, brain, lungs, teeth etc,

What Causes Abscess?

Abscesses are mainly caused due to infections with bacteria, viruses, parasites, intravenous drug use. The common bacteria responsible for skin abscess are staphylococcus aureus. Weak immune system is the basic risk factor for skin abscess as the body’s ability to fight infections is decreased.

Symptoms of Abscess :

Common symptoms for skin abscess includes swelling and pain in the infected area, the area becomes red and warmth and we can see white and yellow pus bubbles on the skin. Some people may have high temperature depending on the severity of the infection.
Symptoms of internal abscess differs depending on the infected area like symptoms for liver abscess may be jaundice, abscess in or near lungs may have symptoms like cough and breath problems.

Tooth abscess may have symptoms like severe tooth ache, sensitivity to chewing or biting hot and cold temperature foods. Some common symptoms of internal abscess includes

  • Fever
  • Discomfort in the area that is effected
  • Vomiting
  • Chills
  • Increased sweatting
  • Fatigue.
